Visionaries have long been fascinated by the age of space exploration and escape. When it comes to fashion’s interest in futuristic colors and synthetic materials, the sky is the limit for celestial inspired fashion as ancient civilizations worshiped the sky, while later cultures tried to make sense of the stars. The Greek deity Artemis is often depicted with a crescent-moon crown, and this season fashion is literally out of this world…taking inspiration from both space-age design and the immensity of the night sky- not to mention this week’s solar eclipse aka red moon. At this spring’s Christian Dior haute couture show, a translucent skirt resembled a series of half-lit moons, while the black diamonds that cover Pomellato’s Sabbia ring conjure images of a lunar surface embedded with craters.
Bringing the fantasy of space travel back down to earth, this season Versace showed a fully embroidered evening dress straight out of a sci-fi film that could easily be worn in-flight on Virgin Galactic later this year…because any trip to another planet deserves a chic ensemble. Materials inspire notions of space age style as textures shimmer and sparkle. Nothing reflects the majesty of a shining star like jewels such as the diamonds in Chanel’s Fine Jewelry Comete collection and the rhinestone headpiece worn this spring at Schiaparelli couture. The glory of the cosmos- and I’m not talking pink cocktails- has designers reaching for the stars, paying homage to the late 1960’s with elegant futurism. But getting back to the space shuttle, how would you accessorize that Versace dress?
