According to the Wall Street Journal, cupcakes are so yesterday, which is why the timing may be just right for Courtney Cowan and her husband Adam Tiller, as they recently opened their charming bakery Milk Jar Cookies in Los Angeles. Cowan bakes 14 inventive flavors daily, all from her personal recipes which include cinnamon sugar, white chocolate raspberry, peanut butter marshmallow, and chocolate pecan caramel. Her melt-in-your-mouth chocolate chip was inspired by the Tollhouse recipe she mastered while in her teens, and the chocolate mint pays homage to those addictive Girl Scout thin mints. The ice cream line consists of banana split and rocky road, which is just as beautiful to look at as it is to devour. And since you really can’t have a cookie without milk, a fresh cold glass- procured from Broguiere’s Dairy- is presented in an old-fashioned mason jar, while coffee is brewed by way of Handsome Roasters in downtown LA.
Although Cowan has been baking for years- and had an online cookie company that launched in 2005- she, along with her husband, spent years in the entertainment business.. working on one of my all-time fave’s Six Feet Under, and even met on the set of Entourage. Now circling back to her true passion, Cowan takes care of the edibles- working on perfecting her recipes, and the soon-to-be Cookie of the Month Club, plus the addition of ice cream sandwiches- while Tiller, who designed the bakery’s logo, handles all of the branding. Cowan believes Milk Jar Cookies should be soft, dense, and chewy, eschewing anything crisp or hard- and so do I…which made for the most amazing cookie-monster experience I’ve had in a long time. And trust me…I sampled a few, even though these beautifully packaged confections could be a meal in itself- which means I’ll just have to go back for more. Very soon. www.milkjarcookies.com
