In New York, fancy food and fancy light fixtures come together at Michelin-star chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s latest spinoff ABC Cocina. Housed on the ground floor of ABC Carpet and Home- and on the other side of his farm-to-table deliciousness ABC Kitchen- this casual and modern hot spot of a few months offers a fusion of tradition and innovation dedicated to whole food and inventive fare which comes by way of Nuevo Latino…or in hipster speak, the great Taco Craze. Collaborating on the food with executive chef Dan Kluger – and next door at ABC Kitchen- the cuisine mixes and matches elements of international culture from Spanish speaking countries in Europe, Mexico, South America, and Central America.

The small-plates menu has seven sections to graze through, making it possible to make an entire meal out of them. Their standout guacamole with spring peas- the best ever– goes down smoothly with sangria that is spiked with passion fruit and hibiscus, while an interesting rum daiquiri with a hint of rhubarb pairs nicely with…well, everything. An eclectic selection of glass chandeliers that look like they’ve been lifted from the lighting showroom upstairs, as well as the rest of the lush and sexy decor- this is ABC Carpet & Home after all- allows for a dinner-party experience which almost makes you forget what you’re eating… at least I did, but I think it could have been the sangria. Jean-Georges seems to have a lock on New York’s dining scene these days, as all of his spots are pretty magnifique. www.abccocinanyc.com
