For Margherita Missoni- of one of fashion’s most storied families- playing dress-up has always been a way of life. So, the 32 year-old mom recently launched her own children’s collection with a chic Parisian presentation, simply called Margherita, inspired by the possibilities of fun that exist in wearing clothes. Her first venture outside the Missoni label was conceived for baby boys and girls ages 0-2, and for girls up to age 7. The clothes, which are affordably priced and sold at Nordstrom in the U.S., possess Missoni’s signature boho elegance and charm: tassel details, exuberant colors, joyful daisy pattern- the flower is the line’s signature.
Missoni, who has an eighteen-month old and a sibling for her son on the way, felt that many of the people designing children’s clothing weren’t mothers themselves and therefore didn’t know the priorities for kids’ clothing. All pieces- washed linen dresses with bright Balinese-batik inspired prints, color-blocked sweaters, seersucker striped tees- are meant to be mixed and matched. She wants children to express their creativity through choosing their own clothes. That’s why she didn’t create any perfect matching outfits. Though first glance, the palettes and wild patterns may recall those of the famed Missoni hues and zigzags, the designer is clear that this is her singular aesthetic. She has the freedom to do whatever she wants, setting her own rules. And so do the fashionable kids who wear her clothes. www.margheritakids.com
