The Swedes like their licorice- so do I- and there’s a place in Los Angeles where you can get over two dozen types of it. Sockerbit is a Swedish candy shop that opened on Third Street in West Hollywood back in April. A few years ago, co-owner Stefan Ernberg and his wife were looking for a career change that would take them out of Europe, so they started with an online store and then opened their first shop in New York in 2011. Sockerbit means sugar cube in Swedish, and is also the name of their signature candy- a candy coated white marshmallow that also servers as the shop’s design inspiration. The store’s minimalist interior is mostly eggshell white with spots of shiny signage.
Each square bin is filled with every candy lover’s dream and sweets in every shape, flavor and color imaginable can be found at this Swedish import. Baby banana marshmallows, gummies galore, nougat, fudge, slow-melting hard candy, chocolate nut clusters, gooey blackberry chews, and caramel and marshmallow licorice candies are all available in pre-packaged boxes, bags, and tins as well as bins sold by the ounce. There’s also a home decor section in the rear of the store with children’s toys, modern kitchenware, and plush towels as well as a small grocery section to one side where you can pick up Swedish meatballs- better than Ikea’s- lingonberry sauce, crackers, cookies, juice and more. Ernberg and his wife have moved to Los Angeles to oversee their west coast expansion and plan to continue opening Sockerbit locations over the next few years. Sweet. www.sockerbit.com
