There happens to be a new, inspirational story about women and prison and no… it’s not on Netflix. Last November, Road Twenty-Two launched in San Francisco where founders Alice Larkin Cahan and Fif Ghobadian produce a luxurious t-shirt line- sweatshirts and button-down shirts will eventually follow. Named after the highway that leads out of Chowchilla prison- California’s largest female correctional facility- Road Twenty-Two is committed to employing women in the US who need a chance, as their goal is to change people’s lives and humanize the image of women who were formerly incarcerated, homeless, or suffering from substance abuse. They plan to hire former prisoners from programs like America Works, Rubicon Foundation and Glide Memorial Church.
Cahan was raised in London and made a name for herself in New York society in the 90’s as a stylist before moving to San Francisco. At 15, Ghobadian fled Iran during its revolution with her family and now the entrepreneur is channeling her experience into the brand. The made-in-America basics are sourced in LA and manufactured in SF, and can be found primarily online for now- where the beautifully packaged goods arrive with an image and backstory of the woman who helped create them- and at a Marin County boutique. If Orange really is the new Black, then Road Twenty-Two is definitely the new Tee. www.roadtwentytwo.com
