Smack in between downtown Los Angeles and Hollywood sits Koreatown, which boasts Southern California’s highest concentration of restaurants, bars and 24/7 businesses. Pretty astonishing when you think back to the city’s riots in the early 1990’s where K-Town was unfortunately front and center for violence and destruction. These days it just so happens to be one of the coolest resurgences LA has going on, and there’s a new hotel about to open that will most likely draw tourists and hipsters alike to this part of town. The Line Hotel will open its doors in January, where this mid-century building designed by Daniel Mann Johnson and Mendenhall in 1964- the same architects behind the iconic American Cement Building down Wilshire Blvd.- is now a 388-room boutique hotel owned by the Sydell Group- their other properties include the NoMad Hotel in New York and the Saguaro Palm Springs.
They collaborated with Koreatown natives Roy Choi, chef/owner of Kogi and A-Frame- who will helm the hotel’s food and beverage offerings- and the Houston Brothers- LA’s nightlife duo from the speakeasy No Vacancy- who will host a cocktail bar and lounge in the hotel- and designer Sean Knibb, who restored and renovated the entire space, having also designed Choi’s A-Frame . A well-stocked magazine stand by art and design collective Poketo will also take part in the up-all-night vibe. Formerly the Wilshire Plaza, The Line is situated alongside Koreatown’s famous pre-1940 brick colonial revivals, and plans to make this the first lifestyle hotel of its kind in the United States to draw upon Korean and Korean-American for culture, food and design. I wonder if one of Roy Choi’s infamous food trucks will be permanently parked in front? www.thelinehotel.com
