With the arrival of England’s littlest Prince- and possible future King- I can’t help but wonder, how will Kate dress him? Although Baby Cambridge- as he’s known for now- was outfitted in a blanket during his first public appearance this week, I have no doubt l’enfant will be royally styled, armed with smart pieces from those fancy European children’s designers I’ve always been partial to over our stateside fashion. Of course you can find Bonpoint, Catimini and Petit Bateau here, but there happens to be a chic destination in LA’s upscale Brentwood Country Mart that specializes in luxury essentials for boys and girls from newborn to age twelve.
Poppy carries a collection of classic styles for every season which tend to be more Euro-centric- meaning these baby clothes are very fashionable without being precious… sorry, rhinestones and bling of any kind are not found here. A favorite of local celebrities- our royalty– such as Jennifer Garner, Reese Witherspoon, and Cindy Crawford, designers by the likes of Flora and Henry, Oeuf, Lucy Sykes, and Christina Lehr, intermix with hip Paul Smith trench coats, cool Jess Brown dolls in Atsuyo et Akiko outfits, as well as the store’s own line, Poppy Luxe. And then there’s the shoe collection…of which I could easily scoop up half a dozen at a time, yet they’re a bit on the small side… for me.
Founded in 2008- with another location up north at the Marin Country Mart- by Jenny Belushi, the actor James Belushi’s wife, along with her good friend Heather Whitney Rosenfield, these two mothers bonded not only over their kids, but their shared love of design and the desire to find beautiful clothing that didn’t make their girls look like younger versions of Miley Cyrus…you get the idea. Now getting back to the Prince, and his style in the making… www.poppystores.com
