You know that expression…good lighting is everything. Well, in my opinion, it most definitely is- and crucial for setting the proper scene- whether you’re entertaining in large scale or having an intimate dinner pour deux. Doug Newton- previously a mechanical engineer- would agree, and is the designer and owner of BK Handbuilt, a Brooklyn based metal, lighting, and furniture company. Everything is hand-crafted in Williamsburg, and the majority of his metal work is showcased inside the global members-only club Soho House- having collaborated with their team of designers for the New York, Los Angeles, Miami, London, Berlin, and Toronto locations.
In addition to Soho House, BK Handbuilt designs custom chandeliers and furniture for home interiors, restaurants- most recently Antica Pesa in Brooklyn- and hotels, such as The Standard- at their two NYC properties, in the Meatpacking district and East Village. As if that doesn’t keep Doug tethered to his welder, his company also produces a lighting line for Nightwood- a modern, rustic furniture and textiles store in Williamsburg- whose owners have been media darlings of late, lauded for their use of reclaimed woods and sustainable fabrics.
There’s a lot in motion these days for BK Handbuilt- with yet another lighting installation at the restaurant BLT Fish- as well as curating their new online store, in development at this time. Already profiled in Elle Decor, and the home decor e-commerce site One Kings Lane, Doug’s designs will undoubtedly become a permanent fixture within the decorative arts world… taking his metal to gilded heights. www.brooklynhandbuilt.com
