She is Estee Lauder’s first Latina global face, and Chanel’s first Puerto Rican campaign star. And now, model Joan Smalls is a designer as her first capsule collection unveiled this month. Joan Smalls x True Religion is a collaboration between Small and the L.A. denim giant True Religion, offering a 16-piece lineup composed of everyday basics, from high-rise skinny jeans to boyfriend silhouettes in sweaters to workout crop tops. Smalls went for simple and comfortable, but she also wanted to make a statement here and there- think French terry rolled sleeve tee worn with a patterned skirt, and a killer pair of heels.

Both her own look and the collection play with tomboy vibes of various stripes, including sexy and punky takes. Smalls is bringing together a slew of the season’s best trends: athleisure, lingerie dressing and 70’s denim shapes while focusing on her own urban, athletic personal style. The Victoria’s Secret angel and regular walker for brands such as Alexander Wang and Balmian is the latest model to release a capsule collection for a denim line and although her first collection may seem small at just 16 pieces, this fall she’ll expand the collaboration with larger scope and more pieces.
