There is a beloved hidden enclave that eludes outsiders and features gorgeous headlands, rocky coves and vast beach access. What may sound like a far-away location perfect for a romance novel- and in a way it is- happens to be right here in Malibu. Point Dume is a promontory on the coast of Malibu that juts out into the Pacific, forming the northern end of the Santa Monica Bay. Filled with history, culture, passion, style and surfing where the light is luminous, the sky is brilliant and the air is fresh, long walks, bonfires and dips in the sea are just a few things that make Malibu a state of mind. And for me, this magical spot is my go-to for an easy escape from the city.
Photographer and Interior Decorator Lyndie Benson shares her deep connection to Point Dume- of which she has lived for twenty years- with the public in a book of photographs called The Point. Fascinated by capturing the truth unseen by the eye yet caught through her lens, Benson became passionate about taking pictures through her extensive world travels- while on tour with now ex-husband, musician Kenny G. Having been mentored by her good friend and legendary photographer Herb Ritts, she specializes in naturalistic portraiture where her own backyard is the stunning backdrop.
A portion of the proceeds from The Point benefits The Malibu Foundation for Youth and Families, and the famous Peace Paddle photo that pro surfer Laird Hamilton coordinated and donated to the National Resources Defense Council, is featured along with other breathtaking images. Spending her days hiking, playing tennis, surfing and entertaining friends leaves Benson in a constant state of Zen and her current project, where she’s building a house which will serve as a footprint for her design philosophy, will no doubt be as inspirational as her photographs.
