You don’t have to be a Trekkie to mourn the loss of actor Leonard Nimoy, who passed away last week at the age of 83. Nimoy’s cultural icon, Mr. Spock, left a profound mark on many, especially those who were obsessed with the original Star Trek series in the 1960’s- that would be my brother who still can’t pass up an episode today- and inspired many geeks thereafter to explore strange new worlds. Although campy, Star Trek’s multi-cultural, thought provoking message was forward thinking- almost avant garde- at that time and still resonates today. For me however, it was all about the fashion and what each new episode would bring in terms of hair and make up- my obsession. Uhura; Ricardo Montalban as Khan; those Klingons with multi-layered eyebrows wearing tunics and mesh sashes over black pleather leggings… genius- I’d definitely sport that ensemble to dinner by the way. And who doesn’t love a girl wearing head to toe faux rabbit. I wouldn’t be surprised if one of Dolce and Gabbana’s collections borrowed from Spock and gang, or maybe Rick Owens, Dries Van Noten, Comme des Garcons… the list goes on. Truly beyond.
Yes!!!! This fashion is so beyond. Just like your blog! The Carrie Source rocks!
