Whisper Editions, an online design emporium, recently set up shop in lower Manhattan opening its first brick-and-mortar on South Street Seaport. Founder and Creative Director Judith Puckett-Rinella- who previously served as a photo director for T Magazine and Vanity Fair- taps artists and designers to create limited-run products, bringing affordable art to the area. The company’s collaborations run the gamut from acrylic Edie Parker clutches to art prints and diamond-encrusted shark jaws. While the website is stocked with a rotation of specialty crafted items such as hand-poured candles, anchovy-print surfboards, and a one-of-a-kind decoupaged mirror frame, among the editions that are available in the shop are gold-dipped feather wall hangings; antler candelabras hand-carved by Puckett-Rinella; and prints by the photographers Chris Burkard and Kurt Markus, whom Puckett-Rinella works closely with.
She explains that her site is very technologically advanced and clean, and is a platform upon which her editions can be the star. Not so much with her physical space, as she spent months scouring lodges and cabins across the country for rustic, new-deal-era furnishings, also using truckloads of local limber inside the brick building. Items featured online also share shelves with other works by the participating artists. Whisper Editions is more of a marketplace, where all these things from different genres come together under the Whisper lens…and make sense. www.whispereditions.com
