The latest restaurant from Los Angeles food titans Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo is located across the street from the pair’s first restaurant, Animal, which opened in 2008. Jon & Vinny’s serves up all-day California-Italian fare from 8am through 10pm, seven days a week. With Animal, Son of a Gun, Trois Mec, and Petit Trois, Shook and Dotolo are hoping to make their long term imprint upon Fairfax District, where many timeless eateries like Canter’s and Schwartz’s take on their owners names. Expect a re-jiggering approach to Italian cuisine with a menu of pizzas and pastas, all made in-house. Italian pastries and breakfast pizzas, baked eggs in Bolognese sauce, antipasto, and crust dip- three kinds of dips- are just some of the dishes offered in addition to meatballs rolled with spaghetti, short rib and pork shoulder, and pepperoni covered pizza.
And for the LA Woman- literally, the name of every stylish girl’s preferred pizza- you will find a healthier take on all this carbo-overload with fresh burrata and a thin layer of tomato sauce. The interior is beautiful and clean, almost Japanese or Scandinavian in feel, with smooth surfaces and lovely hand-made votive accents from celebrated artist Shio Kusaka. In addition to the diminutive dining space- 45 seats- there’s a petite wine shop operation from Helen Johannessen. One can either take a bottle at retail price, open it up at a typical restaurant price while dining inside, or even have a bottle delivered if you’re in the neighborhood. And then there’s the tiramisu… www.jonandvinnys.com
