If you’re like me and not Superbowl obsessed this Sunday, why not peruse pulp paperbacks, catalogs full of fancy modern art and books that you don’t really read so much as just admire. Printed Matter’s third annual LA Art Book Fair is free and open to the public from January 30 through february 1, 2015, at the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA. This unique event for artists’ books, art catalogs, monographs, periodicals, and zines is the companion fair to the NY-based nonprofit Printed Matter’s NY Art Book Fair held every fall in New York.
Featuring over 250 exhibitors- international presses, booksellers, antiquarians, artists, and independent publishers- from around the world, the left coast version of the NY Art Book Fair has been more successful than first imagined, as last year’s fair saw 25,000 visitors over the course of three days. The fair’s curator is excited to be in Los Angeles and working with California artists and interacting with publishers here, much like the art world does, as more and more artists and galleries seem to be flocking to the west coast. LA Art Book Fair is generously supported by LACMA, Hammer, Sotheby’s and others. And the official hotel sponsor is the ACE, where the cool rooftop bar is the place to be after the show…with a book in hand, of course. www.laartbookfair.net

Nice to see people still loving books!
