Former 80’s model- having walked the runway for just about every major designer- and stylist Paula Thomas opened her first stand-alone boutique for her upscale global fashion brand Thomas Wylde in Los Angeles this past February. The flagship store is located next to the company’s headquarters in Culver City, where the beautiful loft-like space showcases the brands’ apparel and outerwear, footwear and handbags. Thomas’ line is manufactured in Korea where quality, attention to detail and efficiency are all key components to her look that merges a streetwise, rock n’ roll vibe with feminine sophistication. The $10 million business has grown up since its debut in 2005 with more dressed-up pieces that now focus on luxury fabrications- although gothic-inspired prints are still a signature. Thomas Wylde became an overnight success in Hollywood, thanks to a range of skull-print scarves that were worn by Lindsay Lohan, Sienna Miller, and just about every other starlet in 2006.
I recently sat down with the uber cool British-born founder and creative director who counts Heidi Klum as one of her best clients- Rihanna, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Nicole Ritchie are also fans, however she tends to keep her celebrity circle selective. I have to say, I was very distracted by all the gorgeous pieces inside Thomas’ perfectly plush-yet minimalist quarters while she explained why flying under the radar is preferable- there are no fashion shows, advertising, or press- which is due in part to keep her line fresh, a bit mysterious, and special. Shops in Miami, Paris and Tokyo are in the works, and a fine jewelry collection is scheduled to debut in July. The company is planning a second line- which will be slightly lower priced- and they offer a by-invitation VIP membership for top customers which includes previews of seasonal collections among other perks. The former Bond girl- at age 17!- definitely has LA shaken and stirred.
