Stockholm Syndrome

The cult-cool Swedish design collective and fashion line Acne- Ambition to Create Novel Expression- will soon be making a big splash in Los Angeles, as their highly anticipated opening this fall will be the newest addition to Downtown LA’s next big shopping stretch. Acne’s largest store to date will be housed inside the historic Art Deco Eastern Columbia Building on South Broadway, and will include the brand’s first in-store cafe run by Stockholm’s Il Caffe. Over 5,000 square feet, this will be the second store in the US following its existing NY outpost, yet the owners- creative director and designer, Jonny Johansson and executive chairman Mikael Schiller- had originally set their sights on the stylish Melrose Ave. but made a last minute decision to change course and head east instead…downtown that is.

Hip to the vibrant and transformative buzz going on downtown these days- especially in the Design District- Acne felt that LA’s urban, walkable setting seems more akin to cities like New York and was compelled to be a part of it. Globally recognized for their unique aesthetic and innovative silhouettes- although initially known for their jeans- Acne sells high-end men’s and women’s clothing to fashion’s tastemakers such as Tilda Swinton, Rihanna and Alexa Chung, among others. And if you can’t make it to Shanghai, Sydney, or their other global stores, you can find these goods at Barney’s New York, Bergdorf Goodman and Bon Marche. So the next time you check out Sweden’s latest contribution to Hollywood, it won’t be a girl with a dragon tattoo…although you may find one in Acne’s dressing room. www.acnestudios.com
